CSIR International Convention Centre receives prestigious environmental rating

8 October 2009

The CSIR International Convention Centre (ICC) has been awarded a Silver Classification by the Heritage Environmental Rating Company in recognition of its ongoing commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations.

"We are delighted with this achievement, which has served as a further motivation for us to take this rating to the next level," says Glenn Harding, CSIR International Convention Centre General Manager. The CSIR ICC has certification for OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and is working on achieving ISO 9001 (Quality) certification in 2010.

"Although the ICC is already ISO 14001 accredited in terms of environmental management, we decided to partner with the Heritage Environmental Rating Company to gain new insights into being even more environmentally responsible," Harding says. "We believe this will assist us in promoting green conferences to clients who share our commitment towards the environment by reducing the environmental impact of their events hosted at our Centre."

According to Rene van Heerden, CSIR Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Manager, the objective for complying with SHE programmes is to give due diligence to SHE in the organisation and to demonstrate that the CSIR is serious and responsible towards the environment and the health and safety of its employees.

The CSIR ICC has various ongoing management measures in place to ensure the safety of its employees, the conservation of the environment, and adherence to legislature on health, safety and environmental aspects. The Centre is also regularly audited on these aspects by external auditors.

"Everyone in the Centre is encouraged to do their part in adhering to SHE policies, specifically when it comes to reducing the impact our daily operations have on the environment," explains Wesley Middleton, CSIR ICC Environmental Officer.

"We are currently using recommendations from the Heritage Environmental Rating Company to address shortcomings and to ensure that we receive a gold rating during our next environmental management assessment," Middleton says.
