CSIR International Convention Centre builds crucial capacity in the hospitality industry

Since 2001, the CSIR International Convention Centre (ICC) has been contributing to capacity development in South Africa by annually taking on two in-service trainees from Tshwane University of Technology studying towards their Food and Beverage or Hospitality Management diplomas.

"We believe in giving previously disadvantaged students a platform to gain first-hand experience and exposure to the corporate industry," says Glenn Harding, General Manager of the CSIR ICC. "To date, we've accommodated 17 trainees, some of whom have been employed by the Centre on completion of their studies."

The Convention Centre has a set of criteria for choosing students who qualify for in-service training. Depending on their course, the trainees are placed in appropriate departments and given a mentor who stipulates their training activities.

Two new hospitality management trainees, Carol Mogwane and Mathabo Mpitso, joined the Centre on 1 July 2009 in addition to a public relations trainee, Refilwe Nchebisang, who started her training in June 2009.

"When our applications were approved, we were so nervous to work at the Centre knowing its excellent reputation," says Carol Mogwane. "But," comments Mathabo Mpitso, "we've indeed been fortunate as our colleagues are very helpful, the work environment is pleasant and there is something new to learn every day."

Public relations trainee Refilwe Nchebisang describes the abundance of knowledge and experience she has gained so far as "priceless" and says she is looking forward to learning even more.

"The training programme will improve the understanding of the trainees and enhance their skills and knowledge about their respective fields," says Glenn Harding. "We wish them well during their stay with us and believe it will be a mutually beneficial relationship."
